Health and Safety

In addition to the Health and Safety policy, Torpedo Factory Group adhere to an Environmental Policy and a Business Ethics policy. Together these policies dictate the approach and implementation of all projects. To promote this ethos, a dedicated expert was brought on board in 2005 with the sole mandate of overseeing health and safety procedures and environmental impact, and to assist the management team in driving forward a culture that puts safety at the heart of the Group’s approach.  In order to ensure achievement of policies, working practices have been introduced supported by documentation to help monitor progress.

Procedures

Every employee is inducted on joining our company, and these induction's include:

• An introduction to Health and Safety
• Risk Assessment
• Kinetics
• Working at Height
• Environmental impact

In addition to these base requirements employees are trained in specific areas dictated by their individual working requirements.  This includes PASMA, Mobile Platforms and technical courses (light rigging, stage erection) etc.

Risk Assessments

For each job there is a set procedure to ensure H&S issues are highlighted and controlled prior to commencement. For small installs the technician will complete a compulsory set risk assessment form prior to starting.  For the larger jobs, requiring set installation or other complex work, a much more involved procedure is followed:

• The Project Manager will visit site to discuss the customer's requirements and discuss Health and Safety aspects of the job with the client and venue, including any special requirements specific to the client/site.
• A full risk assessment in written form with confirmation of findings is then produced, then a method statement, detailing how the install will be implemented, addressing any issues the risk assessment highlighted. This will be discussed with the venue in order to liaise with other contractors or workers (catering teams etc) who may be on site during installation, the event itself, or the de-rig.

Permit to Work

If necessary the Project Manager will issue Permit to Work documents, necessary when there are specific risks identified that require special control. When they are in place no-one can become involved with the job without contacting the manager and signing onto the job. They will be briefed on the risks and informed of their responsibilities, and when a PTW is in force anyone on site not involved and signed on will be excluded from the work area. At the commencement of each work period the Project Manager will gather the workforce to discuss any issues. The Project Manager will continually monitor the site to ensure safety is not being compromised and place further safety procedures in place if a further risk is identified.

Environmental Impact

Environmentally the Torpedo Factory Group are always trying to reduce the carbon footprint. New energy efficient lighting has been installed at the Headquarters along with guidelines produced for Head Office refurbishment in 2007. Large amounts of new equipment packaging material are disposed of at the local waste site to ensure minimum impact & ensuring that everything possible is recycled. The COSHH usage is very small, and no meaningful quantities of any hazardous chemical are used other than spray label remover as a cleaning product - as environmentally better alternatives become available these are substituted.
